MOOC, MOOC, and then MOOC

They have been hailed as the catalyst for a global learning revolution in which anyone with an internet connection can take advantage of a free education from some the world’s top universities.

What are some of the common themes on MOOC?  A global learning revolution is going on…. I remember that was discussed in a forum in our CCK08 back in 2008.  Many participants were excited in online and networked learning, in particular Connectivism, a posited new and emergent learning theory proposed by George Siemens and Stephen Downes.  We talked and shared our views about how technology would likely transform education, and that some of us coined that a fourth revolution is going on, based on a number of evidences, like the Web 2.0, Learning 2.0 etc.  It was 2008, and now by 2012, we are claiming that revolution is reaching its climax with the newly “developed” and “ripened” MOOC.

I was so surprised to find that most posts related to the xMOOCs as the most and foremost to bring forth this global learning revolution.  There wasn’t any mention about the cMOOCs which were the precedent and pioneer in MOOCs.  May be, MOOCs are MOOCs, there are no precedence, because it wasn’t known to everyone yet before 2011.

What is new about xMOOCs?  Mastery learning, video lectures, quizzes, online, open and massive in nature….. and more….

I am quite impressed when Eric mentioned about the need about asking questions, rather than telling students about content through mere lecturing.

Is that what MOOCs is all about?  Video lectures.  Yes, video lectures serve a particular purpose, in providing the content, and ensuring the students followed the structure of a lesson.  That is necessary for learning. But isn’t that sufficient for effective learning?

What questions would we get out of a lesson?  Isn’t that the question (learning) that we would like to ask?  What is learnt through this video lesson?  What could be done alternatively, apart from a video lesson?  Is video lesson the most effective way to “transfer information”?  What are some other methods that could be used?  How would you evaluate these methods?  These are the questions that you would likely derive from a good lecture – see Eric lecture and you would likely agree with me.

It is what happens in the brain of the students that matter, in learning.

Lecturing is just information transfer, but it is the engagement and interaction that would really matter in social learning among students and reflective learning for individual students.

So, what is after the MOOCs?  Would it be going beyond video lectures?  Would it be conversation, engagement and interaction not only in the classroom, but out of the classroom, on the web, throughout networks, or COPs?
